The Care Certificate: Questions and Answers

What is the Care Certificate? It is a form of induction training for new staff in the care and support work industry. This will not be news to anyone with any familiarity with the Care Certificate. It is a basic level of training expected of all staff in care settings.

You might think that you could use an online Care Certificate course such as ours alone. That sounds simple enough, right? But you’d be wrong. The Care Certificate is not intended to be theory based only. To meet the outcomes, you’ll need to show work place competence. This means you’ll need to be in a workplace under supervision. What you can get by completing our course alone is the ‘knowledge element’. Our online course allows supervisors to record observations in the workplace. This lets them award the full certificate.

Not to muddy the waters, but diplomas have now replaced NVQs! But to answer the question – yes and no! The Care Certificate is not equal to a Level 2 Diploma, but it can form part of it. The learning completed for the Care Certificate is the same as part of a diploma. The Care Certificate can be ‘mapped’ to the diploma and count towards it.

This is a difficult question to answer. Again, it depends! The Care Certificate is not required by law. It is also not mandatory under CQC guidelines. The CQC only require induction training ‘to care certificate standards’. We take this to mean employers can adapt training where necessary. A reasonable timeframe to complete the Care Certificate would be 3 months. Again, the CQC do not make this mandatory. Our answer? Ensure all staff complete the Care Certificate in the first 3 months. It’s the only way to ensure compliance.

You’ve guessed it – this is uncertain too! The Care Certificate should be portable. You can take it to a new employer if you need to. This would imply that it does not have a shelf life, much like any other qualification. Like other qualifications though it needs refreshing to stay current. How often you need refresher training is up to your employer, but we would suggest yearly.
